Cozumel

February 2 - 16, 2013

It’s clearly not a mystery that we like both Cozumel and the Iberostar resort there. This was our fifth stay at the Iberostar and our fifth year spending time on the island. This trip was enhanced in the first week with our friends Lori and Scott from Colorado and in the second with Diana and Lee from Saskatchewan. In addition, we made new friends from Ontario who we will hopefully see during subsequent visits. We were very lucky and had the room we wanted - 2101: ground level, king size bed, close to the dive shop and view of the ocean. The sunset from our little porch was wonderful! What could be nicer than sitting with a beer, scotch or glass of wine and admiring this view? The only downside was that snorkelling was not as good as it could have been. In particular the last few days saw strong south winds that added a lot of sediment to the water. The visibility in the water directly off the beach was non-existent. Even diving I encountered decreased visibility and one day the visibility for the first part of the dive on Palancar Horseshoe was the worst I’ve experienced in Cozumel, dropping to less than 10 m (30 ft) for even marginal clarity. Over all, however, the diving was still wonderful. And once again the service provided by Dressel Divers (the on-site dive operation at the Iberostar) was stellar. The dive masters looked after us, found and pointed out some of the amazing creatures that inhabit the reef. The boat crew was always helpful with gear, drinking water, and getting us in and out of the water. The office kept things organized so it all happened smoothly. Of course there are underwater pictures. My favourite is the seahorse. This is the first time I’ve seen a seahorse in Cozumel. I continue to be astounded and amazed by the colour and beauty of the coral and sponges. The other pictures can be found here.
